Narrative

WULI - Rise

This completed artwork presents Sundiata with a clearer sense of assurance, shaped by the experiences that eventually established him as a leader. After leaving Mali during a period of political tension, he spent years in exile, gaining knowledge and forming alliances with neighbouring kingdoms. The detailed textures in the piece reflect this long process of learning, adaptation, and steady strengthening.

The contrast between the darker area and the patterned light suggests a shift from challenge towards clarity. It recalls Sundiata’s return to Mali, when he gathered the support needed to confront the sorcerer‑king Soumaoro Kanté. His victory, as told in the epic, came not from sudden heroism but from preparation, cooperation, and an understanding of both his own strengths and those of his allies.

His posture here communicates readiness—a calm confidence rooted in experience rather than display. This artwork represents Sundiata at the point where resilience and maturity align, enabling him to unify the Mandé people and lay the foundations of the Mali Empire.

Where the sketch conveys beginnings, this version reflects someone who has grown into leadership through consistent, measured progress.
